Hanjan › Samgyeopsal — Korean Pork Belly, Grilled in the Kitchen
No grilling yourself · no smoke on your clothesSamgyeopsal — Korean Pork Belly, Grilled in the Kitchen삼겹살 · 한잔

Samgyeopsal (삼겹살) is Korean grilled pork belly. At Hanjan, a Korean restaurant in Sukhumvit Plaza (Korea Town), Soi Sukhumvit 12, it costs ฿350 and is grilled in the kitchen and brought out ready, so you don't grill it yourself, there is no burner on the table and no smoke on your clothes. Also available as moksal (pork neck) and gochujang-marinated (฿380), served with lettuce wraps, ssamjang and free-refill banchan.
What is samgyeopsal?삼겹살이란
“Sam” = three, “gyeop” = layer, “sal” = meat: thick-cut pork belly, grilled unmarinated and dipped in sesame-oil salt or ssamjang, then wrapped in lettuce with garlic and chili. It is the dish Koreans eat most often when they go out with friends or colleagues, so much so that 3 March (3/3) is “Samgyeopsal Day” in Korea.
Hanjan has four grilled-pork options: samgyeopsal pork belly ฿350 · moksal (목살) pork neck ฿350, leaner and more tender · and both cuts in a gochujang (고추장) marinated version, ฿380, sweet and spicy.
How it differs from a normal K-BBQ place — the kitchen grills it주방에서 구워드립니다
Most Korean BBQ restaurants have you grill at a charcoal or gas burner in the middle of the table. It is fun but has downsides: smoke in your hair and clothes, constant flipping, guessing when it is done, and heat. Hanjan does it differently: the kitchen grills the pork and serves it on a hot plate with the vegetables and sauces. Every piece comes out properly cooked, and you can walk straight back to the office, which suits weekday lunches around Asok and anyone who doesn't want to smell of smoke.
The trade-off is that you don't cook it yourself. If you want the table-grill experience, this isn't that restaurant; if you want good grilled pork without the hassle, it is the feature regulars like most.

Before you order자주 걱정하는 점
- Spicy? — Plain samgyeopsal and moksal are not spicy; the gochujang versions are mild to medium.
- Fatty? — Pork belly is naturally rich; order moksal (neck) if you prefer leaner meat.
- How to wrap — lettuce leaf in your palm, one piece of pork, dab of ssamjang, add garlic, chili or kimchi, fold and eat in one bite.
- Waiting time — about 15 minutes.
- No pork? — see the beef galbi-jjim or bulgogi (฿390), and the chicken dak galbi or fried chicken.
- Takeaway — possible, but grilled pork is best hot; eat in if you can.
What to order with it곁들임
The standard Korean set is samgyeopsal + doenjang jjigae (된장찌개, ฿230) or kimchi jjigae (김치찌개, ฿230) + steamed rice + a bottle of soju (฿290). With a bigger group add steamed egg (계란찜, ฿200), a favourite with kids, and finish with cold noodles (냉면) following the rule that grilled pork must be followed by cold noodles. For drinkers, gopchang is the other grilled dish that pairs well with samgyeopsal.
